okay risma. according to geoffrey leeches. The "how language works" theory in Leech's mind goes something like this. Language is imagined primarily as something we know rather than something we do, and communication through language is a matter of applying that knowledge. Of course, speaking and writing are activities, but the act of speaking or writing or understanding someone else's speech and writing is not the object of linguistic study.

To communicate with B, A encodes his mean ~ ngs ~ n the appropriate forms. To understand A, B matches up the forms which he hears A utter with the corresponding meanings.
